Slag Gallery is pleased to present the two-person exhibition The Childlike Life featuring new works by Chris "Dacs" D'Acunto and Sarah Fuhrman.
The Childlike Life, the name of Chris D'Acunto and Sarah Fuhrman’s two-person show, comes from Kathy Acker’s 1973 debut novella The Childlike Life of the Black Tarantula. Mashing dramatized autobiography with pornography and appropriated texts from canonical authors such as Charles Dickens and Marcel Proust, Acker’s novella is as much as a collage as it is a work of fiction.
Acker’s frenzied and playful approach to appropriation has significantly influenced the work of both D'Acunto and Fuhrman. Borrowing, stealing, reconstituting, and reconfiguring from sundry sources and artists is something both D'Acunto and Fuhrman could relate to when they discussed their works with one another during their studio visits. Both artists create layered, textured, brightly-colored multimedia fusions of their own that suggest the messy confidence of children at play.
As childhood memories haunt Acker’s beautiful, poetic work, both Fuhrman, and D'Acunto see their art as diving deeper into juvenile worlds that blur the boundaries between fiction and reality. D'Acunto and Fuhrman hope that the viewer enjoys these deep dives into the chaos of childhood as much as they have enjoyed creating and collaging.
