Slag Gallery is pleased to present Troy, photography by Susan Anthony.
For the past eight years, Susan Anthony has been working on a photographic project about the city of Troy, New York. This project covers many of the different aspects of Troy: people, architecture, landscapes in urban, suburban, and rural areas of the city.
Troy, NY was one of the most prosperous cities in the United States during the Industrial Revolution, because of its proximity to the Hudson River, the Mohawk River, and the Erie Canal.
The area suffered greatly when the industry moved West, particularly to Pittsburgh, and the economy has never really recovered. There are signs of change because of the community’s resilience, but it is a slow, uphill battle.
The story of Troy is one of suffering and sadness, but it is also one of hope and growth. Anthony's photographs depict the juxtaposition of past and present, old and new, decay, and rebirth in this remarkable historical city.
"I have met and photographed many extraordinary people in Troy. And this project continues to grow. I photographed couples when they first met, and later their children and their grandparents.
I photographed factories eight years ago that today are no longer there.
This project continues to grow and change, and so do I.
It has been an amazing and fortunate experience to go to a city where at first, I did not know a soul, and over many years I become a part of that place."
