Slag Gallery is pleased to present Waxing Glimmer, Shedding Beams, Jeanne Cohen's second solo exhibition at Slag & RX gallery.

Jeane Cohen's paintings suffuse immediacy and wild vitality, recording her process of integrating perceptions, imaginal experiences, and emotions into the picture plane.  The high-energy compositions and swirling pictorial conglomerates move into and out of abstraction, at times densely filled, reading as a painterly continuum, and at others, as clusters of marks set in somewhat barren surroundings.

Like being swept up in a gust of leaves, Cohen's paintings present a flow of decipherable information with shifting points of reference; painted components evolve from their contexts, churning with aliveness.   Loosely integrated aspects of the paintings remain fresh and open amongst focused, densely rendered natural forms and mythic creatures.  Gesture and mark evolve, as Emilie Stark-Menneg puts it, "into atmospheric dreamscapes, where patterns crackle, data disintegrates, and spirits unfold. "

Cohen is not only depicting imagery, but through art-making,  the artist is also generating perceivable slivers of the cosmos.  In the artist's own words: "My paintings are like gentle folds in the fabric of the cosmos, which is pressed up against itself and senses itself in two places at once.  Much like when I place my hand on my heart and have the simultaneous experiences of twoness and oneness, my paintings create sensory contact between minds.  Each painting is like a shed skin of my consciousness."

Jeane Cohen's paintings reflect the boomerang-like tendencies of nature, with an internal capacity for call and response and conscious resonance.
