Biography

Alain Kirili, a French American sculptor, is known for his focus on verticality and modeling in his artwork. His work embodies an "aesthetics of spontaneity" and strives for formal unity through the use of diverse materials, seeking an essence of "organic simplicity." Kirili has also extensively worked on monumental sculptures for public spaces, including projects at the University of Bourgogne in Dijon, Paris, and Grenoble. Notably, he was commissioned by the Ministère de la Culture to install the sculpture of the 20th century in the Tuileries in Paris.

Born in 1946 in Paris, France, Kirili lived and worked in both Paris and New York. He sadly passed away in 2021 in New York City.

Kirili's artistic contributions have been recognized worldwide, with his works included in various prominent collections. In the United States, his sculptures can be found at renowned institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art and The Morgan Library & Museum, both located in New York City. Other notable collections include the Jewish Museum, Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, and the Vogel Collection at the Museum of Art Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. His works are also part of the collections at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Nasher Foundation in Dallas, Texas.

In France, Kirili's sculptures can be found in esteemed institutions like the Centre Georges Pompidou / Musée National d'Art Moderne, the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain, and the Fonds Régional d'Art Contemporain in Franche-Comté, Basse-Normandie, and Bretagne, respectively. Other notable museums housing his work include Musée des Beaux-Arts in Angers, Musée Picasso in Antibes, Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen, Musée de Grenoble, Musée d'Art Contemporain in Lyon, Musée d'Art Moderne in Saint-Etienne, and Musée des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes.

Kirili's work has also been displayed in selected exhibitions around the world. These include shows at Le Grand Palais in Paris, La Cohue, musée de Vannes in France, Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris, Musée d'Orsay in Paris, Brooklyn Museum in New York, Musée Rodin in Paris, Frankfurter Kunstverein in Frankfurt, Dallas Museum of Art, Museum Haus Lange in Krefeld, and the Institute of Art and Urban Resources, PS1.
