Biography

Born in 1977 in South Korea, currently living and working in Seoul, South Korea.

H.K Kwon is a Korean artist who can be described as both a walker and a painter, as the two activities converge in his creative process.

Heir to the Dansaekwa tradition, his landscape paintings arise from a meditative reflection and an action that engages his body on the canvas. The viewer perceives a subtle reality beneath the successive layers of oil applied with his fingers, resembling repetitive horizontal and vertical sequences. This abstract punctuation rhythmically animates the canvas with movements borrowed from cinematography and musical notation.

Since the health crisis of 2020, the artist has developed a habit of taking daily "walks," allowing him to prepare his body and mind while transcending the boundaries between the outside and inside worlds, with the goal of recreating a sensitive and sensory landscape. A blend of traditional Korean art and contemporary practice, each work possesses a richness of interpretation and an openness to contemplation.
