Biography

Christopher Yockey (b. 1976, Detroit, MI) is a sculptor who currently lives and works in New York City. Yockey received his Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a Bachelor of Arts from Elmira College. Yockey has participated in exhibitions in Beijing, China; The Peace Tower at The Whitney Museum of Art, New York, NY; Frederick Meijer Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids, MI; Grand Rapids Art Museum, MI; and through the New York City Parks Department. Yockey is currently an artist-in-residence with the Athena Foundation, a volunteer at Socrates Sculpture Park, and an artist assistant to Mark di Suvero.

Through his work with Mark di Suvero, Yockey has developed his practice using scrap steel and off-cuts from di Suvero’s studio to construct his forms. His work emphasizes pattern, structure, and the natural irregularities inherent in hand craftsmanship. Notably, Yockey uses washers as stencils, repeating their circular shapes across the steel to build intricate patterns. Ultimately, his sculptures reflect both a larger shared history within the material and a commitment to transforming what exists into something new.
